Does Your Company Need an Audit?

SSM now lets some small private companies skip the audit. Enter your figures for a quick check under Practice Directive 10/2024.

1. What type of company is it?
2. When does the financial year you're asking about start?
3. Your company's figures (use the highest of the last three years)

A company must meet at least two of the three limits in the current year and the two years before it. This is a general guide; we confirm your exact position before your year end.

    Questions

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does every Sdn Bhd in Malaysia need an audit?

Most do. Under SSM Practice Directive 10/2024, a private company can be exempt if it meets at least two of three limits on revenue, total assets and employees for the current and previous two financial years. The limits rise from RM1 million, RM1 million and 10 employees for years starting in 2025, to RM3 million, RM3 million and 30 employees from 2027.

If my company is audit-exempt, do I still need to file accounts?

Yes. Exempt companies must still prepare unaudited financial statements under the approved accounting standards and lodge them with SSM.

When must audited accounts be ready?

Financial statements must be circulated to shareholders within 6 months of the financial year end and lodged with SSM within 30 days after that.

How much does an audit cost in Cyberjaya?

Audit fees depend on your revenue, the number of transactions and how organised your records are. We give a fixed quote after reviewing your accounts.

Do you have an office near Cyberjaya?

Yes. Our Seri Kembangan office is a short drive from Cyberjaya, and we also have an office in Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur.

    Can I change auditors?

Yes. Shareholders appoint the new auditor and the outgoing auditor is informed. We handle the professional clearance steps and make the switch straightforward.

How long does an SME audit take?

It depends on the size of the company and how ready your records are. Well-prepared records can shorten the audit considerably.

Why choose an audit even if we are exempt?

Banks, investors, tender boards and some suppliers may still ask for audited accounts. An audit also gives directors independent assurance over their numbers.

Do startups with investors need an audit?

If the company doesn't qualify for audit exemption, yes. Even when exempt, investors and venture funds usually ask for audited accounts before and after funding rounds.

Does MSC Malaysia status change the audit rules?

No. The Companies Act audit rules still apply. Companies with tax incentives should keep proper, audit-ready accounts, as incentive claims and reviews rely on them.
